Why address field order matters in Australia and New Zealand
Most e-commerce platforms are built around North American address conventions. For Australian and New Zealand stores, this creates a structural address mismatch at checkout, one that's easy to miss but has a direct impact on delivery outcomes.
The AU/NZ address standard
In Australia and New Zealand, the correct order places sub-address information before the street address. This is defined in AS/NZS 4819:2011 Rural and Urban Addressing, the joint standard governing how addresses are assigned and recorded across both countries. Australia Post and NZ Post both follow this structure, which means carriers expect addresses formatted in this order:
- Unit or sub-address (apartment, level, suite)
- Street address
- Suburb and/or city
- State and postcode
Why it causes checkout problems
Platforms like WooCommerce, Shopify, Magento and BigCommerce commonly label fields as "Street Address" first, followed by "Apartment, suite, unit, etc." While this aligns with North American requirements, it encourages the wrong order for Australian and New Zealand customers.
Confusion arises when field labels don't match the required input order. Customers naturally follow what they see on screen, so when an address is returned in the correct format but displayed against mismatched field names, they may feel something is wrong and attempt to fix it. These manual edits introduce errors, reduce confidence at checkout and ultimately lead to delivery delays or failures.
How Addressfinder handles it
Addressfinder identifies each component of an address and returns it in the correct AU/NZ structure, regardless of how your form fields are labelled. Whether a form uses "Street Address" or "Address Line 1", the data is consistently ordered correctly. No configuration is required.
The best checkout experience pairs this with neutral field labels such as "Address Line 1" and "Address Line 2" rather than labels that guide customers into the wrong format. Together, accurate data structuring and neutral field design reduce errors and improve delivery outcomes.
